PRESS RELEASE

TSANTALI Mavroudi is on the top again – Gold Medal at Berliner Wine Trophy 2019

Mavroudi has received the Gold Medal at the international competition Berliner Wine Trophy Spring Tasting 2019, which has been taking place for over two decades in Germany and is authorised by OIV.

This distinction is the second one for Mavroudi, after the Gold Medal that it had received at the PAR Wine Award International 2019, in the early March.

TSANTALI Mavroudi continues to have a significant upturn, with positive assessments, showing the perspectives of this indigenous variety.

A few words for Mavroudi grape variety:

The Tsantali family started the revival of the Mavroudi grape variety with the restoration of the vineyard in Maronia (PGI Ismaros) in 1995.

From the first winemaking processes, the outstanding potential of the variety was remarkable, due to its exceptional profile.

Today the cultivation of Mavroudi has expanded in many different regions in Greece.

The bottling of Mavroudi as a single varietal wine is still rare though. Mavroudi is among the oldest Greek grape varieties from antiquity. Its name points out its characteristic feature, the almost black colour of the grapes. The ending of the word -di (Mavrou-di) refers to the small size of the grapes (thick skin and lesser flesh), which means the low proportion of juice to its skin, that results into wines with deep red colour.

Winemaking does not show difficulties, as long as Mavroudi easily produces aromatic red wines with ageing potential.

Production remains low and hardly reaches 700 or 800 kg per decade and demands a special type of pruning.

After some experimental winemaking processes that started in 2003, TSANTALI Mavroudi followed only exporting activity. In 2005 Mavroudi took part in many International Competitions for the first time and was distinguished. Today Mavroudi continues its route abroad with exceptional reviews.

The varietal wine TSANTALI Mavroudi comes from red wine that matures in 300 Lt French oak for eight months with further ageing in the bottle.
